Example: The new library was built last year. • When we don’t know who did the action. Example: The window was broken last night. • When it is easy to understand who did the action. Example: Three people were taken to the hospital after the crash. CHANGING FROM ACTIVE TO PASSIVE VOICE We change a sentence from active to passive voice in the following way: • The object of the active sentence becomes the subject of the passive sentence. • We use the verb to be in the same form as the verb in the active sentence. • We use the past participle of the main verb in the active sentence. • We use the word by if we want to say who performed the action.
