Summary report of coral reefs in Spartly Islands in April 2005

The percentage of hard substratum cover will be using the Points Intercept method (Hodgson and Waddell,1996) on the 6 replicate of the transect 150 m total long The data was collected including by hard coral, soft coral (to the specific of genus and living growth of form. For example ACB: Acropora branching coral), dead coral, dead coral with algae, sea weed, sponge, gravel, sand, rock, silt/clay and other organism living in the coral reef. (English et al 1997).

Survey locations were recorded with a portable GPS unit (WGS84), at each location one transect was surveyed independently of reef slope site ca: 8 – 12m deep. Stony (hard) corals - species wherever possible (Veron and Pichon 1976, 1980, 1982, Veron, Pichon and Wijsman-Best 1977, Veron and Wallace 1984, Veron 1986, 1990, 2000, otherwise genus and growth form (e.g. Porites sp. of massive growth-form) Results In total, some 164 reef-building coral species in 44 genera from 16 families recorded range among the 6 sites One coral species are new distribution records for Vietnam: Acropora fastigata and a further 1 species have been recently recorded from Vietnamese waters was Stylophora subseriata for the first time which species had found in Nhatrang bay in february 2005 The list of hard coral species in the survey sites Some images of coral species A new record Acropora fastigata Fungia horiida Isis hipputis
