Abstract Le Dat contributed remarkably to the theory and practice of poetry. He was noticed with his opinion on ernin “words”, in w i e lai ed t at poetry st be s in t and polyse o s “ olyse y is a must because a poetic line carries the whole history of words that work in different cultural levels and come out from both the conscious and unconscious of the writer.” e istory of words, re arded and used by Le Dat, is closely connected to folkloric texts and literary texts in the medieval Vietnam and China. Reading poems by Le Dat means reading into the history of all the component words and the multi-directional relations between them. Extensive and comprehensive knowledge related to literature and culture from the ancient to the present day is much helpful for readers to understand his poems.
