Abstract This article discusses linguistic characteristics of folk songs that were collected 128 years ago by Huynh Tinh Cua and printed in his collection Cau hat gop . With the help of Dainam National Language Dictionary compiled by Huynh Tinh Cua, we explain the meaning of Vietnamese ancient words and Southern dialect words that frequently appear in various folk songs. In this article, the regional characteristics of Southern folk songs collected in the late 19th century will be analyzed based on dialect words and forms of addressing in Southern Vietnam. We also explain the meaning of folk songs that contain many Sino-Vietnamese words.
