ABSTRACT Applying text linguistics in developing students thinking skills through folk stories reading comprehension at secondary schools The current trend in teaching and learning philology in schools is focusing on forming and developing different levels of thinking skills for school students with priority being given to three high level thinking skills namely Analysis, Synthesis, and Evaluation. From the analysis of the potential use of text linguistics in understanding folk stories, this paper suggests ways of applying text linguistics in designing a system of questions and exercises for folk stories reading comprehension lessons. This system would hopefully contribute to enhance high level of thinking skills for school students through philology.
